Individual Counseling

During the initial diagnostic evaluation session, a history will be taken, and we will set goals and discuss the counseling process.

Brenda will answer your questions about how the process works and hopefully help you develop a comfort level so that this process will be a positive experience for you.

Couples Counseling

Our initial session will be done with both partners present wherein a personal history is taken, and we do goal setting. A recommendation is made at that time regarding the number of sessions and frequency of sessions. During the course of couples counseling, Brenda may recommend the individuals come separately sometimes and together other times.

Family Counseling

Our initial session will be done with the parents or adult partners wherein a personal history is taken, and we do goal setting. A recommendation is made at that time regarding the number of sessions and frequency of sessions. During the course of family counseling, Brenda may recommend the individuals come separately sometimes and together other times.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR was developed by Dr. Francine S. Shapiro in 1987. It is an integrative therapeutic method utilizing bilateral stimulation on order to stimulate the information processing system of the brain. This treatment is hypothesized to facilitate the accessing and processing of traumatic memories and to bring these to an adaptive resolution. When people suffer from trauma, it often ties into REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is the time when we process our daily emotions. Some trauma may be so painful that the REM process rejects it. EMDR is an intensified version of REM, developed to handle trauma in its most serious form. EMDR allows a client to process an emotional experience that he/she cannot yet talk about, yet following an EMDR session find an ability to talk about it freely. Most importantly, it can eliminate stress surrounding the traumatic event.

EMDR has been shown to be helpful in treating the following conditions: post-traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks, anxiety disorders, sexual abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, complicated grief, and stress reduction.

Brenda Kizor was trained in EMDR in 2000 and has been successful in utilizing this method with many clients since that time.

Cognitive-Behavioral therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of counseling that focuses on modifying certain thoughts and behavior patterns to control the symptoms of a condition. Essentially, it is the belief that if you change your thoughts, you can make positive changes in your behavior.
